The following short film documents the MP4-12C’s first week in North America, from its unveiling at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance to a private viewing at the future site of McLaren Beverly Hills on Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles. The car received an overwhelmingly positive reaction from guests at both locations and we look forward to visiting many more cities as the 12C continues its tour of North America.

McLaren Automotive has unveiled the groundbreaking MP4-12C in North America at the world-famous Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The car took centre stage at three key locations over the weekend.

The official presentation of the 12C was made by McLaren Automotive’s Managing Director Antony Sheriff, opening the Gooding & Company auction of classic sports cars on Friday. Included in the auction was one of just 72 iconic McLaren F1 road cars. Regarded by many as the greatest sports car ever built, this example, chassis number 62, was sold by Gooding & Company on Sunday for $3,250,000.

The same Supernova Silver 12C was then displayed on the famous Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Concept Car Lawn during Saturday and Sunday. Taking pride of place, and with the honour of being the first car on the lawn, its arrival drew crowds and gave North American car enthusiasts the first opportunity to see (and hear) the 12C in action.

McLaren Automotive’s Design Director, Frank Stephenson, discusses the 12C with Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
A Titanium Silver 12C and the XP13 rolling chassis were also presented to over 1,000 guests, including Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger and world-famous car collector, Jay Leno, in McLaren Automotive’s hospitality tent at a genuinely unique location. McLaren Automotive enjoyed a high-profile position overlooking the famous 18th fairway.
Antony Sheriff, McLaren Automotive’s New York-born managing director, said:
“Launching the 12C at Pebble Beach and the Gooding & Company auction was a huge success. The feedback from visitors was simply phenomenal, and being able to make that direct link to our unique road car heritage with the presence of a McLaren F1 at the event was very special.”

Together with the Jardine Motors Group, we are delighted to confirm that the showroom for McLaren London will be located in the stunning landmark location, One Hyde Park. Situated at the top of Sloane Street in the heart of Knightsbridge, between Harvey Nichols and Harrods, McLaren London will be positioned on the ground floor of pavilion B, the largest of three retail spaces.
Sinan Omer, Brand Manager of McLaren London said “Securing One Hyde Park as our showroom is the icing on the cake, and will give us a home that is befitting of McLaren’s sports cars: like the company’s headquarters, it continues the important McLaren tradition of presenting the company from a stunning facility that is both visually impressive and absolutely fit for purpose.”

The showroom will acknowledge the racing lineage and the Formula 1 inspired technology incorporated in the MP4-12C, displaying a McLaren Formula 1 car. McLaren London is anticipated to be McLaren Automotive’s leading European retailer and, potentially, the busiest in the global network when it opens in early 2011.
No sooner had we packed up our cars from Goodwood, we were on the move again to Pebble Beach, California to launch the 12C in North America. The second week in August on the Monterey Peninsula sees one of the most prestigious automotive spectacles in the world. The show comprises several events throughout the week, including premium vehicle auctions, historic motor racing, vehicle unveils and rallies, and it culminates with the 60th anniversary of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

Validation Prototypes 16 and 24, along with a rolling chassis, are on their way to California, where they are expected to be met by discerning American enthusiasts.
The MP4-12C will be on display on the Concept Car Lawn in front of The Lodge at Pebble Beach from noon on Saturday, August 14 and all day Sunday, August 15, and the McLaren team will be on hand to field queries.
6/30/2010
The MP4-12C will be presented to the British public for the first time at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK this weekend. Jenson and Lewis will be driving Validation Prototype 9 (VP9) up Goodwood Hill on Saturday and Sunday. It will be the first time the F1 champions will have driven a VP car following their test of experimental prototype 12Cs at Goodwood Motor Circuit in March.

Motorsport fans will also be excited at the prospect of seeing the 1995 24 heures du Mans winning McLaren F1. GTR1 won the legendary endurance race on its debut, securing McLaren a unique ‘triple crown’. To date, no other manufacturer has won the Formula 1 World Championship, the Indianapolis 500 and Le Mans 24 Hours. This iconic car will be on the McLaren Automotive stand throughout the weekend.
Joining the F1 and VP cars on the stand will be a 12C rolling chassis. This will enable visitors to see under the skin of the car and understand exactly how each bespoke component of the 12C is positioned around its unique carbon MonoCell.

Two further retailers are to be appointed in Germany and one in Spain, concluding our initial European network.
Ron Dennis, McLaren Automotive’s Executive Chairman said: “We have been rigorous in the selection process of our first group of global retail partners – taking a year to select the best 35 from 600 potential retailers. They are now part of the McLaren family.”
Christian Marti, McLaren Automotive’s Regional Director for Europe, commented: “We are working very closely with our European network to deliver great solutions for our future customers.”

Production will start at the beginning of 2011 with the first customer cars being delivered in the spring. Initial production will commence in the McLaren Technology Centre but will quickly move to the newly built McLaren Production Centre. The MPC construction programme continues to make great progress and our production teams will move to their new home in April.

Antony Sheriff (our Managing Director) commented: “This is a landmark day for McLaren Automotive as we confirm the locations of the first of our partners that will represent us around the world. It has been incredibly encouraging to experience the demand to sell McLarens from the world’s best car retailers – in every country in which we planned to launch and at the heart of all performance car markets.
“Our business will succeed on our ability to exceed our customers’ expectations - for technologically advanced cars, great quality and reliability, and excellent relations with their retailers. Our aims are simple: to offer the best cars and service ever seen in this demanding market.”
“Therefore, our challenge has been to find retail partners with the same attitudes as McLaren – an absolute focus on being the best that is inherent in everything we do and a natural result of our successful motor racing heritage.”
5/7/2010
McLaren Automotive is currently testing Validation Prototype (VP) cars at several locations around the world. A number of these cars have been built specifically to test the 12C’s levels of dynamic performance. Chief Test Driver Chris Goodwin has been evaluating all aspects of 12C prototype performance since the first concept phase vehicle was built at the McLaren Technology Centre, and he’s currently working on a test programme at Applus IDIADA in Northern Spain. Chris explains here how the 12C is already achieving its dynamic performance targets.

“We’re at a phase now where these prototypes are performing incredibly well and I’m loving every minute of being out here with the engineers and technicians working on the launch of the 12C.
“Every technical feature of the car has been designed to deliver outstanding ride, handling, straight-line performance and safety. The Carbon MonoCell was introduced to early prototype cars and because it weighs less than 80kg, the car at that point felt dramatically lighter and therefore more agile. Since then, a bespoke suspension system and features like Brake Steer have been tuned to ensure that when calibrated together, we have a car that promises to beat its direct competition in those areas when it launches in 2011.”

1st May 2010 - VP10 leaves the McLaren Technology Centre for testing in Spain.
[--Teaser break--]
On the high speed bowl here at IDIADA, the 12C VP car is exceptionally stable even above 300kph. On the dynamic platform, the chassis electronics are helpful, but not intrusive and we are seeing great results on the handling course. An equal amount of work has been put into the low speed drivability of the 12C. On the public roads around here, it feels comfortable and unintimidating. I could drive it all day.
“There is still a way to go in developing the car. We have programmes planned to further test it in extreme hot and cold conditions, as well as to fine-tune subjective areas like in-car noise and cooling systems. We’re getting very close and I’m looking forward to handing over the results of this project to our first customers.”
4/8/2010
Production of MP4-12C Validation Prototypes (VP) is now under way at the McLaren Technology Centre. Offering the best indication yet of the 12C’s production readiness, these models are successors to the all-black XP Beta-phase cars, and feature the very latest versions of technologies developed specifically for the 12C. Interior textiles and exterior paint finishes are also applied so that McLaren Automotive’s designers, engineers and manufacturing personnel are able to holistically appraise the newest members of the 12C concept-phase fleet.
As you might expect, these are exciting times for those involved in the 12C launch project.
Neil Patterson, Chief Engineer at McLaren Automotive, reflects on his role in creating the lightest high performance sports car in its class:
“From the start, it has been my responsibility to ensure that not one gram is added to the structure of the 12C unnecessarily. When designs are complete, we try to find an extra 5% mass saving. Where we have to accept an increase in one area, we don’t give up - we look to reduce or reclaim it elsewhere.”
“Starting with the unique carbon fibre MonoCell, the lightest and stiffest body structure design in its class, our integrated approach has meant that we are on target to deliver the 12C at least 75 kilos lighter than any competitor car – truly impressive when you consider the level of safety and features as standard."

“We’ve not only considered how much weight we have but also where we have it. We’ve favoured reductions at the extremities of the car over those near the centre of gravity. This has reduced the “polar moment of inertia” of the car, meaning that the 12C’s willingness to change direction is improved, giving a quick response to steering inputs.”
“The VP cars now being built are the closest yet to production-ready iterations of the 12C, and it is enormously satisfying to see the team’s collective engineering efforts being realised. The benefit to fuel efficiency and CO2 output from a lightweight car is clear, and the 12C aims to be best in class on both counts. Thanks to the light weight and low polar moment of inertia, when the first owner takes delivery of the new 12C they will own a car that delivers unparalleled levels of dynamic performance.”
3/24/2010
On March 18, we invited top journalists and broadcasters from around the world to the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC), the home of the McLaren Group, to talk about our exciting plans for McLaren Automotive.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K05AvJGYXhs
Ron Dennis (our Chairman) and Antony Sheriff (our Managing Director) confirmed McLaren Automotive’s ambition to compete head-to-head with the world’s best sports car brands with a range of two-seat cars, whilst introducing some seriously innovative technologies, business practices and customer experiences.
Ron commented: “We have long held the dream of building a range of McLaren high-performance sports cars that take the raw elements of Formula 1 principles, processes and performance and forge them into a unique package; one that offers customer-focused requirements of quality, efficiency, and reliability. Today’s announcements confirm our intention to challenge convention at the pinnacle of automotive design, from a new high-tech home that I am proud to say will deliver jobs, expertise and innovation in manufacturing and engineering”.
Jenson and Lewis edge the 12C close to its millionth mile of testing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqAxN_xq80Y&feature=player_embedded
The testing and development team at McLaren Automotive blends experience in developing Championship-winning Formula 1 cars and a unique, innovative approach to designing high performance sports cars. The engineers responsible for each of the technologies bespoke to the MP4-12C are always seeking new ways to refine these components and when calibrated together in the 12C, they are tested to the absolute limit. This intensive approach to testing products and systems requires the very best test drivers. For that reason, McLaren Automotive’s Chief Test Driver Chris Goodwin was asked to introduce 2008 Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton and 2009 Champion Jenson Button to the MP4-12C at Goodwood Motor Circuit in the south of England on 02 March 2010. Programme Director Mark Vinnels led a team of 15 Vehicle Development Managers and Technicians to the famous British race circuit to support the exciting track session, which was Jenson and Lewis’ first experience behind the wheel of the XP (Experimental Prototype) 12Cs.

Jenson Button comments on his debut in XP10:
“I like that there is no switchgear on the steering wheel. You simply select the mode you want using the Active Dynamics Panel and after that there is no need to concentrate on anything but driving. Within just a few laps I was very comfortable with the car and I was pushing hard through corners. It’s very quick in a straight line too and the only problem I had driving the 12C on a race circuit was remembering that it is a road car!”
Lewis Hamilton describs his first driving impressions of a 12C prototype:
“The visibility is great from the driver’s seat. You really appreciate that in tight corners. I love the McLaren F1 and like that car, the huge front windscreen of the 12C allows you to take in all of the information you need to judge the perfect line through apex turns. The 12C team at Goodwood told me that they are aiming to make the best performance car on the market. After driving an XP car, I’m convinced that is exactly what they will do.”
Our specialised testing programme continues at a pace around the world as we develop, test and refine the MP4-12C. Indicative performance data from the most recent test sessions are confirming the development team’s confidence in producing a car that will set new standards in the high performance sports car market. Tests have shown exceptional out-and-out performance as well as quality, safety, comfort, and efficiency levels:
0 – 200 km/h under 10 sec
200 – 0 km/h under 5 sec
100 – 0 km/h under 3 sec / 30m; less than seven car lengths
V-max over 200 mph
¼ mile around 11 sec
CO2 under 300g/km
Lightest dry weight around 1300kgs
[--Teaser break--]

Mark Vinnels, McLaren Automotive’s Programme Director said “As you would expect of McLaren, we are aiming to set new standards for all performance criteria, from top speed to fuel economy, in-gear acceleration to braking distances and carbon dioxide emissions.”
“What these results don’t show though is the overall package compared to our competitors that will make the 12C easier to drive, more comfortable to spend time in, and dynamically jaw-dropping,” Vinnels concluded.

From spring 2011, the MP4-12C and all future McLaren sports cars will be produced at the new £40 million McLaren Production Centre (MPC) in Woking, England.
Just like the award-winning McLaren Technology Centre, the MPC has been carefully designed by Foster + Partners to fit perfectly into its environment to be as efficient and environmentally sensitive as possible. Construction is already underway and the new facility will be operational in just 12 months, with quality systems that combine the best of both hand-built techniques and ‘lean’ production processes.
Up to 300 new jobs will be generated directly as a result at McLaren, with many hundreds more indirectly through the construction programme, supply chain, and brand new global retail network.
An example of a McLaren dealership.
Up to 1,000 12Cs will be delivered in 2011 through a new global network of dedicated McLaren retailers in all major markets in North America, Europe, Middle-East, South Africa and Asia-Pacific.
“We are not simply looking for dealers with the best showrooms in the best locations but for dealers who share our ethos of taking care of customers. The showrooms will also reflect the design standard and functionality you would expect from McLaren, offering customers an experience like no other. An experience of true value and exclusivity” confirms David Lumley-Wood, Head of Network Development.
Several partners have already been chosen and over the course of the next couple of months the full network will be defined and made public.
Once dealers have been appointed within a region, they will begin to work directly with customers to formalise expressions of interest.
